The collapse occurred around 10:30 p.m. local time while famed merengue artist Rubby Pérez was on stage, performing for a packed crowd. Eyewitnesses report a loud cracking sound followed by a massive crash as the building’s roof caved in, sending debris flying across the crowded dance floor.
Emergency responders and volunteers rushed to the scene within minutes, working through the night to pull survivors from the rubble. Search-and-rescue efforts have continued amid fears that more victims remain trapped beneath the debris.
“This is a moment of profound national mourning,” said Dominican President Luis Abinader, who declared three days of mourning and visited the site on Wednesday morning. “We are doing everything possible to support the victims and their families. A Night of Celebration Turns to Horror
Jet Set, one of Santo Domingo’s most well-known nightlife venues, was hosting a special performance celebrating the legacy of merengue music. The audience included several prominent figures from sports and entertainment, some of whom are now among the dead.
Among the confirmed fatalities are:
- Octavio Dotel, former Major League Baseball pitcher
- Tony Blanco, former MLB player and national sports hero
- Nelsy Cruz, sister of MLB star Nelson Cruz and former governor of Monte Cristi province
Tony Blanco is being hailed posthumously as a hero for reportedly helping several concertgoers escape before he was fatally injured by falling debris.
“He didn’t hesitate,” said one survivor. “He was lifting people, guiding them to the exits. He could’ve made it out earlier, but he stayed to help.”
The investigations are crucial for ensuring the safety of future events across the Dominican Republic.

Investigations Underway
Preliminary assessments suggest that structural failure—likely due to neglected maintenance and possible recent unauthorized modifications—may be to blame. Authorities have launched a full investigation, with the Ministry of Public Works and Civil Defense leading forensic inspections of the site.
The nightclub’s owners and management have not issued a formal statement, though legal action appears likely as questions mount over building safety and code compliance.
A Nation in Mourning
This incident serves as a reminder of the need for stronger safety protocols in the Dominican Republic.
As discussions arise, the Dominican Republic’s government is under pressure to implement changes.
The catastrophe has sent shockwaves through Dominican society and the global Dominican diaspora. Vigils have sprung up across the country, with mourners lighting candles and playing Rubby Pérez’s songs in tribute to the lives lost during what was meant to be a joyful night of music and unity.
Sports leagues, cultural organizations, and music institutions have also issued condolences, mourning the loss of beloved figures and calling for increased safety regulation in entertainment venues.
“This should never have happened,” said one attendee, still visibly shaken. “We go to these places to feel joy, not fear. Something has to change.”
As recovery efforts continue and families begin the difficult task of burying their loved ones, the Dominican Republic is left grappling not only with grief but also with a hard truth: a tragedy of this scale was preventable.
Now, amid sorrow and outrage, the country faces a choice — to let this moment pass as just another heartbreak, or to let it be the start of real, lasting reform in public safety standards. For the victims of Jet Set and their families, the hope is clear: that their loss will not be in vain.
